Two community real estate agents, Denise Evonne Matthis and Rod Jetter, received recognition at a breakfast held at the International House of Pancakes in National City on Tuesday, March 27, 2007. Both agents received plaques from the North American Title Company in acknowledgement of the knowledge, experience, and exemplary customer care they bring to the real estate profession.

Denise Matthis, who has lived in San Diego since the age of two, began her career in real estate in the late 1980’s specializing in obtaining financing for first time home buyers and the credit challenged. She is credited with assisting over 358 families obtain the "American Dream" of first time home ownership. She has also helped many others create wealth through the acquisition of real estate.

A registered tax preparer and notary public, Denise conducts workshops and seminars for first time homebuyers, credit repair, and seniors. She holds the professional designation of Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), a designation held by only a few realtors in the United States. She also holds the designations of Accredited Buyers Representative (ABR), Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES), Certified Mortgage Planning Specialist (CMPS) and has been awarded the designation from the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants as a Registered Mortgage Advisor (RMA). As the owner of DEM Financial Services Denise has provided many employment opportunities and has mentored young minority bankers and entrepreneurs. She believes that when you put God first and family second, business will naturally fall into place.
Rod Jetter has been in the real estate business since 1991. He holds a Master’s degree in software engineering and has in depth training in real estate practice, appraisal, investments, and law; property management, creative financing, taxation, economics, and exchanges. He is a member of the Council of Residential Specialist, the San Diego Association of Realtors, the California Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors. Rod holds the designations of Graduate Realtor Institute (GRS) and Accredited Buyers Representative (ABR). Rod is also one of few realtors in the United States to hold the designation of Certified Residential Specialist (CRS).
Known for his warm personality and professionalism, Rod has made his father’s words of wisdom the foundation for Jeter Real Estate: "Son, as long as you tell the truth, you don’t need a memory."
Both Matthis and Jeter are members of the Encanto Real Estate Group founded in 2001 by Kirsten Ferrer and Patrick DeShields. Rod is a former chairperson of the group comprised of individual brokers, realtors, lenders, and vendors from National City, Chula Vista, and Southeastern San Diego, which encourages the community to trust and utilize neighborhood agents.
"We want people to acknowledge that there are good real estate agents right in their own backyard," says Ferrer. She adds, "Going with larger companies that have a name does not necessarily mean that you will be getting an experienced agent. Agents like Matthis and Jeter have the training, years of experience, and very good reputations."
Both Ferrer and DeShields believe that, although "mom and pop" realtors have been doing business in the community for more than forty years, they have not been invited to participate in the sale of new developments, nor have they received the recognition they deserve.
The North American Title Company at the quarterly meeting of the Encanto Real Estate Group will recognize other outstanding community real estate agents.

Mount Helix Real Estate

Mount Helix, a subdivision of La Mesa, contains some of the most coveted real estate in the area. The older homes of Mount Helix are almost exclusively single family, detached houses with beautiful views. But that is as far as one could go to characterize them. Each is an extraordinarily unique property—one of a kind mansions designed for the most discerning tastes. From the most postmodern architecture to classical brick homes, the houses of this part of Mount Helix are marvels.

Mount Helix's newer subdivisions are architecturally considerate as well. Many are Craftsman or Mediterranean style homes which reflect the warm climate and relaxed atmosphere around them.

The older developments start at around $500,000, while many of the newer homes and the more ornate sell in the million dollar range. The average single family home or condo sold in, February 2006, for $555,933.

Mount Helix used to be used for avocado groves, and this is still apparent in parts of the area. Many homes look out onto the trees, as some property owners have opted to keep this historic characteristic around their lots. Others have filled their property with professionally-maintained landscaping, and the neighborhood always looks neat and well cared for.

Homes at the top of the hill look out all over San Diego, and visitors come up Mount Helix daily to watch spectacular sunsets. Mount Helix also attracts visitors to its famous cross at Mount Helix Park, where sunrise Easter service is celebrated and people also come to hold weddings, parties, concerts and prayer services.

Residents send their kids to great public schools that emphasize science and technology. Local shopping includes Grossmont Center, the La Mesa area mall, and quaint small stores throughout La Mesa. Many Mount Helix residents commute to work in downtown San Diego, about half an hour away. A trolley line runs through La Mesa to downtown as an alternative form of transportation.
